OEM Linking Pin: 2019 Acura TLX – Outer Quarter Panel Sectioning With Rolled Hem Flange

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. Recently, we had a technical inquiry that asked for clarification on sectioning the outer quarter panel through the rolled hem flange on a 2019 Acura TLX.

Per the Honda/Acura Body Repair Manual Welding & Sectioning Guideline Revisions: “Depending on the type of vehicle damage, steel parts with a tensile strength of 780 MPa or less may be sectioned if all three of the following conditions are met:

  1. Sectioning must be done in a single-layer area of the part.
  2. Multi-layer internal steel reinforcements and stiffeners must not be cut.
  3. Do not section in load bearing areas, such as engine, transmission, or suspension mounting points.”

We reached out to Acura for clarification on sectioning the outer quarter panel in the area of the rolled hem flange, as to if it qualifies as a “multi-layer” panel. Per our contact at Acura: “If it is a hem flange, there are at least three layers involved and very little opportunity for adhesive or corrosion protection.”
