Backup Battery And Low-Voltage Disconnect: Kia

When an accident happens, how will you call for help? Maybe the telematics system, equipped with a backup battery, could automatically do this, even if the main power is cut off. What are the repair considerations, and where can information be found for backup batteries? Let’s see what Kia has to say.

Some Kia models have a 12V Auxiliary Parking-Lithium Battery Module (P-LBM) that is used to supply power for functions during parking. Kia uses this battery to support the following:

  • Over-the-Air Updates (OTA)
  • HVAC afterblow function
  • Built-in Camera(s) enabling high-definition recording

Kia has a document with precautions for all models equipped with a P-LBM. To locate this document:

  1. Go to kiatechinfo.com
  2. Enter username and password (left side of webpage)
  3. Click Login
  4. Click Service Materials (top of webpage)
  5. Click Pitstops
  6. Type PS781 in Search Text box
  7. Click Search
  8. Click 12V Auxiliary Parking-Lithium Battery Module (P-LBM) (PS781)
  9. Click hyperlink to open document in new window

Per the 12V Auxiliary Parking-Lithium Battery Module (P-LBM) (PS781) document, Kia states:

"Prior to performing any service that may require the main 12V battery disconnection, ensure that:

  • The main 12V battery positive (B+) terminal located under the hood is disconnected.
  • The hood or trunk is open AND remains open for the duration of the service.
  • At least five (5) minutes have elapsed after the main 12V battery positive (B+) terminal has been disconnected to ensure no voltage is in the system."

Kia also notes that DTCs related to the trunk or hood may affect the deactivation of the P-LBM.

P-LBM removal and installation procedures are typically found in vehicle-specific service information under: Body (Interior/Exterior/Electrical) ➤ Security & Vehicle Ignition Systems.

Always follow OEM vehicle-specific service information when disconnecting the low-voltage battery and ensure all post-repair calibrations and initializations are completed.
