Rivian Restraints Wiring

The question is often asked, "Can supplemental restraints system wiring be repaired?" The answer is: it depends on the vehicle maker. Let's take a look at Rivian's position on this subject.

Rivian has a Harness Repair Guidelines document that provides information on when wiring may be repaired, including restraints wiring. This document can be found in vehicle-specific service information under: 78: Low Voltage Electrical, General ➤ Disable 12V Power ➤ Harness Repair Guidelines.

Per the Rivian Harness Repair Guidelines document:

"Certain harnesses can only be repaired to a limited degree:

  • Harnesses that connect to airbags, airbag sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, and pyrotechnic HV disconnection switches: Only perform squib (pigtail) replacement."

Per the Connector Repair area, Rivian states:

  • "A pigtail is a connector housing that is supplied with the terminals pre-installed. Each terminal has a short length of wire attached."
  • "A squib is a type of pigtail that is used for harnesses that connect to airbags, airbag sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, and pyrotechnic HV disconnection switches."

The information also includes instructions for proper wiring splicing with a non-insulated crimp barrel and adhesive shrink tubing. Based on the statements above, Rivian allows repairs to the body-side SRS wiring harness as long as a Rivian-compatible replacement squib pigtail is available and used.

Lastly, Rivian forbids the repair of wires damaged by specific events, such as flooding or thermal events.

Always follow OEM repair procedures and guidelines, especially when performing restraint wiring repairs.
