Non-SRS Wiring Repairs: Jaguar Land Rover

What is a non-SRS wiring repair? It is the repairing of an electrical component that is not part of the supplemental restraints system circuit (usually identified by yellow wire looms). As technology increases on vehicles, so does the number of components that utilize electricity. Many of the sensors and modules are becoming smarter and more sensitive. If the wire is too long, the wrong gauge, or spliced in the wrong location, it can cause malfunctions in the components that it’s powering. Many OEMs have different restrictions and guidelines for repairing wiring that does not control SRS components. On the other hand, there are OEMs that don’t allow wiring repairs at all, so full harness replacement is the only option.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) provides a robust document on wiring repair which includes procedures, tools, repair materials, and cautions. It is located under Electrical ➤ Wiring Harnesses ➤ Wiring Harness. Some cautions to note:

"Under no circumstances should repair be attempted to the following:

  • Link lead assembles, which are unique to safety critical circuits such as ABS and thermocouple circuits. An example of this is the ABS wheel speed sensors with moulded connectors.
  • Throttle Control circuits.
  • Speed Control circuits.
  • Screened cables, leads and wiring harness(s)."

When working on high-voltage (HV) or mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) if cable or harness is damaged, it must be replaced. HV are identified by Orange coverings and MHEV are identified by Light Blue coverings.

Prior to proceeding with a repair JLR states: "... the damaged wire must be inspected along its length where possible to evaluate the full extent of the damage. If the damage is in a localized area the wire repair is recommended, if the damage is extensive, a replacement harness should be considered. A wire being repaired must be cut at a point where there is no damage to the wire or insulation."

Always remember to disconnect the battery prior to performing any wiring repairs and review all safety measures relating to the vehicle systems.

It is important to read and follow OEM procedures to be certain what electrical wiring repairs can be carried out to help achieve a complete, safe, and quality repair.
