Ultraviolet (UV) Cured Primer

Repair facilities constantly look for ways to become more efficient. One of the ways that may increase efficiency is ultraviolet (UV) cured primer.

Ultraviolet curing primer can greatly reduce cycle time. UV products will completely cure in 30 seconds to a few minutes. Conventional refinishing materials can take 30-45 minutes to cure in a bake cycle.

A quart of ultraviolet primer can last 3-4 times longer than urethane primer because of its higher solid content. Due to the higher solid content and the 100% complete curing of a UV product, shrinkage is minimal and immediate, meaning that there is no shrinkage or repair mapping.

UV products will not cure until exposed to UV light, usually supplied by a special UV lamp. For this reason, Ultraviolet primers have no pot life. UV cure products are typically one part and require no mixing or reducing. Anytime a UV primer is poured out of its container, it should poured into a black or opaque mixing or spray cup to prevent surrounding ultraviolet light to reach the primer and cure it before it’s sprayed. There is little to no waste, as any product left in the gun can be poured back into the original container for later use. These products are also available in aerosol cans for added convenience and time saving.
