Jaguar Land Rover High-Voltage Technician Levels

As electric-only, hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles are increasing in sales, they are becoming more commonplace in repair facilities. Along with the unique powertrains that come with these vehicles, also comes unique safety concerns. Regardless of vehicle maker, high-voltage (HV) systems pose a threat of injury or death if not handled properly. Only personnel with the proper training, PPE, tools, equipment, and service information should perform work on the HV systems.

Many OEMs have specific training requirements for different levels of high-voltage technicians. Typically, these levels range from no interaction with any high-voltage part of the vehicle (even after the high-voltage battery is disconnected/isolated), to the ability to work on the vehicle under live conditions at the highest OEM HV education level you can earn. The number of levels in between these two ends varies by OEM. Always check the OEM requirements before attempting to disable an HV system. Let’s see what Jaguar Land Rover has to say.

Jaguar Land Rover specifies different levels of authorization, and what roles and responsibilities are associated with each. This information is located in the Electric Vehicle Safety Rules document. You can find this document, using the 2022 Jaguar E-Pace as an example, in the Workshop Manual ➤ 4: Electrical ➤ 414: Battery and Charging System ➤ 414-01C: Battery Mounting Cables - Vehicles With: PHEV ➤ Electric Vehicle Safety Rules.

The following are definitions of the authorization titles as well as examples of some of the responsibilities:

• Electric Vehicle Informed Person (EVIP): "A person who has successfully completed the JLR Approved EVIP Awareness Course and recognized by the Company as having sufficient competence to enable him or her to avoid any risk and/or hazard."
• "Receive work instructions and perform work on EV systems, excluding work on components within the HV system or work that directly affects the HV system, as directed by the JLR approved workshop manual procedures."
• "Perform work as specified in the work instruction in accordance with JLR Approved Workshop Procedures."
• Electric Vehicle Competent Person (EVCP): "A Person who has successfully completed a JLR EVCP Approved training course and recognized by the Company as having competence to enable him or her to avoid any risk and/or hazard."
• "Perform the designated work as detailed in the PTW."
• "Make sure JLR workshop manual procedures are followed at all times during any work on EV system."
• "Enact the role of Safety Accompanying Person during any Live Working activities."
• Electric Vehicle Authorized Person (EVAP): "A Person who has successfully completed a JLR EVAP Approved training course and recognized by the Company as having sufficient competence to enable him or her to avoid any risk and/or hazard."
• "Perform a vehicle Power Down procedure to make HV systems safe for work or testing."
• "Prepare PTW for work on HV systems or other EV system requiring a vehicle Power Down."
• "Confirm safety measures are in place."
• Electric Vehicle Senior Authorized Person (EVSAP): "A Person who has successfully completed a JLR EVSAP Approved training course and recognized by the Company as having sufficient competence to enable him or her to avoid any risk and/or hazard."
• "Be the single Person-in-Charge controlling the Work being undertaken."
• "Perform all Live Working activities and supervise other members of the Working Party during work/testing on live HV system components."
• "Confirm safety measures are in place for Live Working activities."

The authorization required for certain procedures is identified at the top of vehicle-specific procedures. It is important to note that the Electric Vehicle Safety Rules document may not be found in some Jaguar Land Rover Workshop manuals.
