Steel Spot And Plug Weld Nugget Size: Mercedes-Benz - UPDATE
Did you know that some OEMs specify nugget size for spot and plug welds? This information is typically found within vehicle-specific repair procedures or can be found under general welding guidelines. Let’s see what Mercedes-Benz has to say.
Spot Welding
Mercedes-Benz does not indicate a specific spot weld nugget size in their collision repair information.
Mercedes-Benz provides information on spot welding in the General Information On Body Repair document on their service information site. The document shows welding symbols used in repair procedures and states:
- Welding tests are to be performed before repair.
- Spot welds should be placed approximately 20 mm apart.
- Multi-layer sheet metal with hardened adhesive must have squeeze-type resistance spot welds (STRSW) positioned on the original spot welds.
Mercedes-Benz Spot Welding Requirement/Recommendation
Mercedes-Benz does not indicate a spot welding vs. plug welding preference in their collision repair information.
Plug Welding
Mercedes-Benz does not indicate a specific plug weld nugget size in their collision repair information.
Plug weld information is only found in certain repair procedures. The procedures show where plug welds should be used and indicate that 5.5 mm holes are required.
