Spot And Plug Weld Nugget Size: Mercedes-Benz

Spot And Plug Weld Nugget Size: Mercedes-Benz

Did you know that many OEMs specify nugget size for spot and plug welds? This information is typically found within vehicle-specific repair procedures or can be found under general welding guidelines. Let’s see what Mercedes-Benz has to say.

Mercedes-Benz provides information on spot welding in the General Information On Body Repair document on their service information site. The document shows welding symbols used in repair procedures and states:

  • Welding tests are to be performed before repair
  • Spot welds should be placed approximately 20 mm apart
  • Multi-layer sheet metal with hardened adhesive must have squeeze-type resistance spot welds (STRSW) positioned on the original spot welds

Plug weld information is only found in certain repair procedures. The procedures show where plug welds should be used and indicate that 5.5 mm holes are required.

Follow OEM welding requirements, including what nugget size is required, to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
