Bumper Cover Repair With ADAS: Porsche

A simple bumper repair on a modern vehicle may not be as simple as it seems. New technologies like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) utilize sensors behind the bumper covers. The ability for these sensors to be able to see clearly, normally requires special caution when considering a bumper repair. Many OEMs have different levels of warnings when it comes to repairing bumper covers with ADAS. So, what does Porsche say on the subject?

Porsche does not have a position statement on bumper cover repair. When we reached out for additional information on a position statement, our contact directed us to refer to the repair manual. Per our contact at Porsche, "It is imperative to consult the workshop manual because it dictates what is to be done, or not to be done."

Our contact clarified this further by stating "The required work varies by model line, model year, and specific vehicle equipment”, and “Firstly, it is a good idea to check if there is any limitation on paint thickness for the specific bumper cover you are working on. Then, look at the specific front and or rear bumper cover removal and installation instructions to see what 'subsequent work' is required."
