Bumper Cover Repair With ADAS: Porsche - UPDATE

A simple bumper repair on a modern vehicle may not be as simple as it seems. New technologies like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) utilize sensors behind the bumper covers. The ability for these sensors to be able to see clearly, normally requires special caution when considering a bumper repair. Many OEMs have different levels of warnings when it comes to repairing bumper covers with ADAS. So, what does Porsche say on the subject?

Porsche released a Restrictions On Sensor-Affecting Repairs To Porsche Bumpers position statement pertaining to repair precautions for vehicles equipped with ADAS sensors near the bumper covers. Porsche does list systems which may be affected by sensors near the bumpers.

In the position statement, Porsche states: "If damaged bumpers are not properly repaired, painted or wrapped, this may affect sensor operation and give incorrect feedback to the driver, thus increasing the risk of an accident/collision."

Porsche provides restrictions in the radar transmission area which include:

• "Bumpers must not be painted."
• "Bumpers must not be covered with car wrapping or decals."
• "Cracks/breaks in bumpers must not be repaired by plastic welding."

Prior to the release of the position statement, we reached out to Porsche for additional information. Our contact directed us to refer to the repair manual.

Per our contact at Porsche: "It is imperative to consult the workshop manual because it dictates what is to be done, or not to be done."

Our contact clarified this further by stating: "The required work varies by model line, model year, and specific vehicle equipment", and "Firstly, it is a good idea to check if there is any limitation on paint thickness for the specific bumper cover you are working on. Then, look at the specific front and or rear bumper cover removal and installation instructions to see what 'subsequent work' is required."

Always refer to the vehicle-specific workshop manual prior to performing any repairs.
