Mazda Fender Grounding

A major issue that faces many collision repair technicians is comebacks. With modern vehicles, many of those comebacks are due to electrical problems, bad grounds being a huge contender. Mazda has identified this as a common problem and issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) on the subject.

The Mazda Multiple Electrical Malfunctions After Body Repair TSB explains that the front fender stay, or bracket, is a common area for a bad ground. After refinishing the fender, the ground area gets covered in refinish material. If the fender is already refinished it is recommended to sand or grind the paint from grounding area. If it is prerefinish you should mask the grounding area. Then use touchup paint for any exposed metal after installed. Models covered by the TSB include

  • 2016-2019 CX-3
  • 2013-2018 CX-5
  • 2016-2018 Mazda2
  • 2014-2018 Mazda3
  • 2014-2018 Mazda6
