Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee

While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently get questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by searching the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee ADAS.

For 2019, the Grand Cherokee comes standard equipped with blind spot detection, rear cross traffic, park assist, and rear view. Additional optional systems include active park assist, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, collision braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. This means that there is a large array of cameras and sensors that collision repairers will need to be aware of, many of which will require calibrations. The first sensor you will notice is the front radar sensor. It is easy to recognize because it is an exposed radar, meaning that is not hidden behind the bumper. Located in the lower grille, in the center, the dark rounded shape bubble is the sensor. This sensor gives information to systems such as adaptive cruise control and collision warning/braking. When removing this sensor, a warning is given, per the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee repair manual “The three molded plastic ball socket clips in the ACC module mounting bracket MUST be removed, discarded and replaced with new ball socket clips any time the module is removed from the bracket.” There are several events that will require calibration for this sensor.

Next there are 6 ultrasonic sensors going across the front bumper cover and an additional 4 ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper. These sensors report to the park assist and active park assist system. These sensors do not require calibration.

Located in the interior of the vehicle, in front of the rear view mirror is the forward facing camera. This camera sends data to the lane keep and collision warning/braking systems. Calibration is required for this camera according to the events listed in the repair manual.

Behind the rear bumper cover is are two radar sensors. There is one on each side of the bumper cover. These sensors are attached to the bumper cover itself. These sensors are used by the blind spot detection and rear cross traffic systems. Calibration is not required for these sensors.

Finally, there is a camera located in the center bezel on the rear lift gate. This camera is for the rear view system. This camera will not require calibration.
