Corrosion Protection Guidelines: Mercedes-Benz

A key factor in collision repair is making long-lasting repairs. When a vehicle is repaired, many areas of corrosion protection are disturbed. This creates corrosion hot spots, that left untreated will lead to corrosion, and potentially a repair failure. However, there are certain precautions that can be taken to safely and properly restore the corrosion protection throughout the repair process. OEMs often give specifications on restoring corrosion protection. These specifications generally include seam sealer, adhesives, foam fillers, and cavity waxes. Let’s take a look at what Mercedes-Benz says.

Information on corrosion protection can be found in the vehicle-specific body repair manuals. Per the Mercedes-Benz repair manual: “After body repairs, the cavities in the processed area must be sprayed with wax. It is also necessary to perform repair preservation when detachable parts (e.g. fender (front), engine hood, doors, trunk lid) are replaced and welding, riveting and soldering work is carried out.” Mercedes-Benz specifies their own brand of cavity wax and seam sealers. The specified products are as follows:

  • Cavity Wax A 000 986 72 70 05
  • Sealant A 001 989 63 20
  • Sprayable Seam Sealer A 002 989 84 20

Always follow OEM repair procedures for all repairs. Failure to follow corrosion protection guidelines can lead to premature failure on a repair. Using the proper corrosion protections will help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
