Great Designs in Steel 2016 Presentations: A Closer Look - 2016 Honda Civic

In case you missed it Shawn Crichley and TJ Palesanos from Honda R&D America Inc. presented New Global Model Introduction: The All-New 2016 Honda Civic at Great Designs in Steel 2016.

Weight reduction via improved body construction is key for the 2016 Civic. Aluminum has made an appearance in the front bumper reinforcement and crush caps.

The coupe does not have the 1500 MPa door ring that has been appearing on most of the newer Honda’s, including the 4-door Civic. Instead, the B-pillar sees the introduction of hot stamping and 980 MPa materials to help strengthen yet reduce the Civic’s weight.

The sub-frame is also called out as a load path in a collision for improved collision energy management.
