Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: 2019 Cadillac XT5

While many have noticed that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are showing up on vehicles, there still is confusion on what is required of these systems after a collision occurs. The Ask I-CAR team frequently gets questions in regard to calibration of ADAS. Many of these questions can be answered simply by using the OEM Calibration Requirements Search. However, there are some questions that may need more details than the calibration search provides. Let’s take a look at the 2019 Cadillac XT5.

For 2019, the Cadillac XT5 offers collision warning, collision braking, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, park assist, 360° camera view, adaptive lighting, and rear view systems. This means that there is a large array of cameras and sensors that collision repairers will need to be aware of, many of which will require calibrations. Located in the front bumper are ultrasonic sensors. There are additional ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumper. These sensors are used by the park assist system. Calibration is not required for these sensors.

Behind the front bumper are three radar sensors. Two short-range sensors are attached to the inside of the sides of the bumper cover. A long-range sensor is attached just underneath the bumper reinforcement. These sensors send information to the adaptive cruise control system. Dynamic calibration will be required for the long-range sensor after certain events. The sort-range sensors do not require calibration.

Located near the Cadillac emblem in the grille is the front camera that is part of the 360° camera view system. This four-camera system also has cameras located on the bottom of each exterior side-view mirror. A final camera is located in the center of the liftgate. The liftgate camera is also used for the rear view system. There are several events that will make calibration necessary for these cameras. The calibration procedure for these cameras is a static calibration.

In front of the rearview mirror, attached to the windshield, is a forward-facing camera. This camera sends data to the adaptive cruise control, collision warning, collision braking, and lane departure warning/lane keep assist (LDW/LKA) systems. There are several events that make calibration necessary for this camera. This is a dynamic calibration procedure.

Located behind the rear bumper cover, there is a radar sensor on each corner of the vehicle. The sensors are mounted to the inside of the bumper cover directly below the quarter panel. These sensors are used by the blind spot detection and rear cross traffic systems. In addition, there is an additional short-range radar sensor located behind the middle of the rear bumper. This sensor is part of the rear automatic braking system. There are no calibration events for these sensors.
