DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

1. Inspection, testing and installation work may only be carried out by expert trained personnel in BMW Service.
2. Remove ignition key.
3. Disconnect battery negative terminal and cover.
4. Work on components of the airbag system should only be carried out with the battery disconnected, the negative terminal post covered and the plug connection of the cable leading to the gas generator disconnected. If only the battery is disconnected, it is absolutely essential to adhere to the specified waiting period: 1 minute.

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

For a front airbag deployment:
• Control unit (The control unit permits up to 3 crash entries and must be replaced after the third crash. In this case, the fault memory cannot be reset or cleared. The airbag warning lamp will light up permanently in the instrument cluster).
• Steering wheel
• Driver airbag module [Steering Wheel Airbag]
• Passenger airbag module [Instrument Pnl Airbag]
• Cover for airbag module (on instrument panel)
• Contact ring
• Seat belt systems in use at time of collision
• Any damaged restraint system part

For a side airbag deployment:
• Side airbag modules
• Door trim panel
• Control unit (The control unit permits up to 3 crash entries and must be replaced after the third crash. In this case, the fault memory cannot be reset or cleared. The airbag warning lamp will light up permanently in the instrument cluster).
• Seat belt systems in use at time of collision
• Any damaged restraint system part

For a head airbag (ITS) deployment (if equipped):
• Head airbag module [Roof Airbag]
• A-pillar trim
• Roofliner
• Control unit (The control unit permits up to 3 crash entries and must be replaced after the third crash. In this case, the fault memory cannot be reset or cleared. The airbag warning lamp will light up permanently in the instrument cluster).
• Seat belt systems in use at time of collision
• Any damaged restraint system part

For a C-pillar airbag deployment:
• C-pillar airbag module
• C-pillar trim
• Control unit (The control unit permits up to 3 crash entries and must be replaced after the third crash. In this case, the fault memory cannot be reset or cleared. The airbag warning lamp will light up permanently in the instrument cluster).
• Seat belt systems in use at time of collision
• Any damaged restraint system part

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

• Cables and plugs
• Impact sensor for side airbag
• Seats
• Steering column
• Passenger airbag supporting tube
• B-pillar trim (With a head airbag ITS deployment)
• All seat belts and components
• Seatbelt mountings to the car body
• Seatbelt mountings to the seat
• Seat structure
• Airbag plug connections
• The components of the airbag system (also diagnosis electronics)
• Any restraint system part or wiring identified by diagnostic check

Caution!
Only repair airbag cables which show visible signs of damage. If there is visible damage, make sure that only one cable repair is present after repairing. If no visible damage can be identified, the entire cable must be replaced. When carrying out repairs to airbag wiring harness: The spare parts offered in the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) must be used.
