DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

The pyrotechnic components may be checked only when they are installed and with a VW approved vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system.

1) The battery ground cable must be disconnected with the ignition SWITCHED ON. Then cover the negative pole.
No waiting time is specified after disconnecting the battery, typically 10 seconds is recommended.

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

Airbag Units, Removing and Installing After an Accident:

The airbag control module must be replaced [MODULE,AIRBAG CONTROL]:
1) With driver and passenger airbag deployment "but not with airbag generation 9.• and 8.R."
2) After three side airbag, side curtain airbag, driver's airbag, passenger's airbag or belt tensioner deployments
3) If housing is damaged
4) If there is deformation on the tunnel in 200 mm circumference around control module

Always replace the following:
• All triggered airbag units [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL; AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL; AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT; AIRBAG,ROOF; AIRBAG,REAR SEAT]
• The battery switch-off relay -J655• or battery interrupt igniter -N253• (equipment versions)
• Damaged securing pieces

Also with passenger airbag deployment:
• Instrument Panel
• Deformed passenger module supports (cannot be reformed)
• All sensors for front airbag on front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FENDER]
• Remaining cross acceleration sensors if anchorage point is deformed in sensor region [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also with Driver airbag deployment:
• Coil connector with slip ring [CLOCK SPRING]
• All sensors for front airbag on front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FENDER]
• Remaining cross acceleration sensors if anchorage point is deformed in sensor region [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also with side airbag deployment:
• Pressure sensor on deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR]
• Cross acceleration sensors on deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
• Cover
• Cushion
• With a folding rear seat backrest: side cushion (if equipped)
• Remaining cross acceleration sensors if anchorage point is deformed in sensor region [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also with side curtain airbag deployment:
• Cross acceleration sensors on deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
• Trim on the A, B, C and D-pillar
• Remaining cross acceleration sensors if anchorage point is deformed in sensor region [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

In Addition:
• All belt retractors with deployed belt tensioners
• All belt retractors with deployed belt force limiters (depending on equipment)

• Any damaged restraint system part

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

Test the system with a suitable vehicle tester.

Passenger Occupant Detection System:
• Each time an airbag or passenger belt tensioner deploys, re-zero procedure must be performed on the passenger occupant detection system.
• If the seat rails and/or the seat pan must be replaced after a accident due to deformation, the seat occupied recognition must also be replaced using the passive occupant detection system service kit.

If needed (visual inspection), the following must also be replaced: all faulty components

• The airbag control module can be used for up to 2 side airbag, side curtain airbag and/or belt tensioner deployments with airbag generation 8.•, except 8.R.
• The airbag control module can be used for up to 2 side airbag, side curtain airbag, driver's airbag, passenger's airbag and/or belt tensioner deployments with airbag generation 9.• and 9.R.
• After the third deployment, the malfunction display "Control module defect" appears.

The following components must be checked after every airbag deployment

• Seat belts and seat belt mounting points

With a passenger airbag deployment:
• Instrument panel center tube; make sure the front passenger airbag module and supports can be installed without tension. Otherwise, replace the center tube.
• Check the glove compartment for damage.

With a driver airbag deployment:
• Steering wheel

• Any restraint system part or wiring identified by diagnostic check
