Hybrid And Electric Vehicle Welding Best Practices

When welding on an HEV or EV, follow the same precautions as when welding on a conventional vehicle. In addition, there are precautions to take with the high-voltage battery. As a best practice, disconnect both the 12 V battery and the high-voltage battery service disconnect. (Note: Always disable the high-voltage battery following the vehicle makers repair information and follow all safety precautions.)

"CAUTION: Do not weld on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high-voltage or 12 V system. Welding on a Tesla vehicle with an energized high-voltage or 12 V system might damage vehicle components.

NOTE: Before disconnecting the 12 V power supply, ensure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout."

Refinish Precautions

Refer to: Body Repair Tech Note: Parameters for Baking Tesla Vehicles After Painting for complete details. "After painting Model S, Model X, or Model 3, it is acceptable to "bake" (force dry) the vehicle in a paint booth with the high-voltage battery installed as long as neither of the following parameters are exceeded:

  • Maximum baking time: 45 minutes.
  • Maximum baking temperature: 165°F (74°C).

If these parameters must be exceeded for any reason, contact the Tesla Body Repair team before baking Model S, Model X, or Model 3."
