Bumper Cover Repair With ADAS: BMW

A simple bumper repair on a modern vehicle may not be as simple as it seems. New technologies like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) utilize sensors behind the bumper covers. The ability for these sensors to be able to see clearly, normally requires special caution when considering a bumper repair. Many OEMs have different levels of warnings when it comes to repairing bumper covers with ADAS. So, what does BMW say on the subject?

BMW states that the blind spot sensors behind the rear bumper cover can be affected by excess paint film, and that no cosmetic fillers are allowed in front of the sensors. The same document shows a drawing of the front fender with dotted lines. Some models may have front blind spot sensors, which per the BMW body repair manual states, "Metal straightening (repair) in the dotted area (1) in not permitted. The side wall panel must be replaced." The BMW manual also states "There must be no mechanical damage (e.g. dents) and no body repair work with filler or painting (several coats) must be carried out in a 10 cm radius about the left or right sensor on the bumper trim panel." BMW also states "To ensure the system function in vehicles with sensor for lane change warning (optional equipment S5ASA and S5ATA), do not repaint the bumper panel in paint stage 1 or paint stage 3."

This is just one example of bumper repair restrictions from BWM. Always be sure to reference the vehicle-specific body repair manual and training materials prior to performing any repairs.
