Per I-CAR curriculum developed in cooperation with the vehicle maker: "CRIB 96 states that panel bonding with structural adhesives is not an acceptable panel attachment method for Toyota/Lexus/Scion vehicles. Since that 1998 CRIB, some limited adhesive applications have been added. CRIB 158 provides the update. Panel bonding with adhesives on Toyota vehicles:

  • may only be done if, and where, the original panel was bonded. This only applies to connect the wheelhouse to the outer quarter panel on some models. The adhesive is used instead of seam sealer. Use of 3M structural adhesive 8115 is recommended. 2009–2010 examples where this is allowed include the Toyota Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, Prius, Venza, and Yaris; the Lexus ES, IS, HS 250h, and RX 450h; and the Scion xB and xD.
  • does not include weld bonding, which is applying an adhesive on the same joint as spot welds or GMA (MIG) welds. This is not done at the factory, therefore, is not recommended for repairs."
