Ask I-CAR

Per I-CAR curriculum: "Considerations for the replacement of fuel tanks include the use of recycled parts. Recycled fuel tanks should be cleaned and flushed before installation. Inspect the condition of the fuel pump and sender module. If not damaged, use the fuel pump module from the original fuel tank."

"Gasoline may be affected by water or other contaminants. Water will separate out to the bottom of the tank where it will be picked up by the fuel pump. Ethanol fuels will absorb a small amount of water. Solid contaminants can plug filters and may clog injectors and damage the fuel pump. Contaminated fuel systems will need to be cleaned and flushed; damaged or clogged parts should be replaced."

"I-CAR is not in the position to make specific recommendations about which parts should be used. Rather, I-CAR is dedicated to providing those in the industry with the information, knowledge, and skills required to perform complete and safe, and quality repairs for the ultimate benefit of the consumer. Whether or not to use a recycled part is a business decision that must be agreed upon by all parties involved in the repair process."
