What does I-CAR say about protecting restraints systems when replacing a welded quarter panel?

Response

Per I-CAR curriculum: The introduction of current or voltage spikes can destroy sensitive electronic parts.

When welding:

  • Keep the current path short by placing the work clamp as close to the weld site as possible on the same panel.
  • Disconnect and isolate both battery cables (remove the negative battery cable first).
  • Disconnect the high voltage (HV) battery service disconnect (if applicable).
  • Keep the welding machine as far away from vehicle computers as possible.
  • Route cables away from computers, wiring, and sensors.
  • Remove computers or other sensitive electronic parts if welding closer than 12'' (300 mm).
  • Protect glass and other areas of the vehicle with a welding blanket and spark deflection paper to protect from welding sparks.
