Ford/Lincoln Has Video Procedures: 2015 Ford F-150 Outer Box Side Replacement

Ford has released a video on updated procedures for 2015-2020 F-150 outer box side replacement. It is important to know that these updated procedures apply ONLY to the F-150 and not to Super Duty trucks.

The video can be found on the FordCrashParts website. To find the video:

  1. Go to fordcrashparts.com
  2. Scroll down and lick on Collision Videos (middle of page)
  3. Click on the F-150 Bedside Repair video

The video covers the two OEM attachment methods for replacing the outer box side.

Rivet-Bonding

As the name implies, this procedure uses adhesive and blind rivets. However, there are a few areas of the outer box side that welding is preferred for appearance. This is highlighted in the video.

Plug-Welds

The plug weld procedure uses only plug welds. No adhesive or rivets are used for attachment.

The video goes on to explain that for both procedures, attachment methods can be combined. Combining methods can be useful for a cleaner appearance of the repair or for a quicker repair.

Although Ford allows the use of self-piercing rivets (SPRs) as an attachment option, the use of them is limited to the specific areas of the wheelhouse and are never to be used on the outer box side of Super Duty trucks.

Although videos can be extremely helpful, they are not intended to replace the written procedures. They are there to serve as a guide. Being diligent with reading and following OEM procedures is vital to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
