Back-To-Basics: Aluminum Panel Repair

Sometimes going back-to-basics can make the difference between a quality repair and a failed repair. When it comes to deciding whether to repair or replace an aluminum panel, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Panel attachment methods are an important consideration when replacing aluminum panels. For example, if a panel is attached via rivets and adhesive, repairs in this area could weaken the joint and it may not perform the way it was designed to.

If the flange is damaged, this could mean panel replacement, which may require the use of special tools for attachment. If the panel was previously replaced, there may not be enough room on the flange to drill new holes for the new rivets. In this case, parts such as inner panels may need to be replaced in addition to the damaged panel.

Always follow OEM procedures and guidelines for repairability of aluminum panels to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
