General Motors: Overlap Joint Procedure In Body Repair Manual

Many General Motors repair procedures call for an overlap joint when replacing certain panels. There is now a separate “Overlap/Backing Plate Sectioning” procedure in some of the body repair manuals (BRM) on how to carry out the overlap joint.

This procedure shows you step-by-step how to prepare the part for creating the overlap, measurements for the size of the overlap, proper drilling of plug weld holes, and how to weld the joint. The overlap procedure can be found in the “Repair Instructions” section of the BRM. If the BRM does not have the separate “Overlap/Backing Plate Sectioning” procedure for the vehicle you are working on, the overlap process will be embedded as part of the step-by-step procedure.

Always follow OEM procedures to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
