OEM Linking Pin: Ford/Lincoln Overlap Measurement With Spot Welds

As part of the I-CAR Repairability Technical Support (RTS) OEM linking pin activity, we are helping to connect the collision repair industry to the vehicle makers. Recently, we had a technical inquiry that asked for clarification on what the panel overlap measurement should be if not specified in the Workshop manual when using squeeze-type resistance spot welding.

For example, on the 2019 Ford Mustang Rear Wheelhouse Outer procedure, it specifies to “Install and weld the replacement section.” and to “Use the General Equipment: Resistance Spot welding Equipment.” However, the procedure does not clarify on what the size of the overlap should be in order to perform the spot welding as required. We reached out to Ford for clarification, and per our contact: “Typical industry at 50mm wide flange”.
