Weld-Through Primer Guidelines: Maserati

Weld-through primers are generally a zinc-based product that are applied to the mating surfaces prior to welding. Corroding zinc forms zinc oxide which protects the steel. This is called sacrificial corrosion. For a quality weld to be made it’s required that the weld-through primer be removed from the direct weld zone before welding the joint when GMA welding. Many OEMs have a position on when and how to use weld-through primer or when it shouldn’t be utilized. Let’s see what Maserati recommends and where this information can be found.

This information, along with other part preparation guidelines, can be found in vehicle-specific body repair manuals under: 09.AA.010 Welding - Preparation of the part for MIG/MAG and spot welding. Maserati states:

  • "Eliminate the layer of paint from an area of approx. 30 mm around the bead or spot to be welded.
  • For MIG/MAG welding, it is necessary to remove the zinc layer underneath.
  • For spot welding, it is not necessary to remove the zinc layer underneath.
  • All superimpositions of sheet metal and the flanges must be coated with primer. For this purpose, use a specific primer for welding (e.g. Inox spray)."

Maserati also goes on to state, when welding, to remove the layer of paint on the back of the area to be welded. This will help prevent impurities from being pulled into the weld puddle.

Use the vehicle-specific body repair manuals to determine which type of welding is required for the repair you are performing. Failure to follow OEM procedures will sacrifice the safety and quality of the repair.
