Identifying Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

There are various visual ways to identify if a vehicle has advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as through the VIN number. However, this is not always easy or possible if you don't know what to look for. A new tool from a surpising resource may help with this issue in the collision repair inter-industry.

Take a look at the Consumer Reports Cars With Advanced Safety Systems tool. Even though it's designed to assist consumers with their purchase of a new vehicle, it has an unexpected positive side effect for the collision repair industry.

Anyone writing an estimate or working on the vehicle can see if a particular system is standard, an option, or not available for that vehicle. If the damage affects a sensor or camera and it is a standard option, you know that additional research will be required. On the other hand, if a particular option is not available for that vehicle, then you will be able to move onto the next step in the process.

The chart is simple to use. Select the OEM from the dropdown menu. Find the ADAS across the top of the chart, and go down the row to the model that you are working on. While this chart doesn't provide information on the calibration of the system, it can be used to determine if additional research is necessary based on the availability of that option for that vehicle.
