Honda/Acura: Who Requires Or Recommends MIG Brazing?

In Europe, MIG brazing has been required or recommended on a widespread basis for several years. In the U.S., MIG brazing is not as common but is becoming more prevalent. As the RTS team is researching MIG brazing information, we are putting together a series of articles that identify OEM-specific MIG brazing recommendations and requirements for vehicles in the U.S. Let’s see what Honda/Acura has to say.

Honda/Acura provide MIG brazing information not only in vehicle-specific body repair manuals (BRM) but on their steel usage repairability matrix as well. The matrix is an overall guide and states “Always follow the model-specific body repair manual for detailed repair procedures” and “MIG brazing is only performed where indicated in the model-specific body repair manual.”

Honda/Acura details the number and diameter of the hole to be used for MIG brazing. This will vary depending on what strength of steel is being joined. For example:

  • High-strength steel to high-strength steel requires two 8 mm holes spaced 10 mm apart for each MIG brazed joint location shown in the BRM
  • High-strength steel to mild steel requires one 8 mm hole in the mild steel for each MIG brazed joint shown in the BRM

In addition, Honda/Acura provides information on wire and shielding gas, MIG brazing joint inspection, and even destructive testing procedures. The easiest way to find this information on the service site is to select a year and model and then do a search for MIG brazing.

It is important to note that MIG brazing should only be used where indicated in a vehicle-specific repair manual or where specified by the OEM to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
