Calibration Research Tips: Honda/Acura Millimeter Wave Radar Mounting Position Inspection

While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at Honda and Acura.

When reading through some Honda/Acura service manuals, the sensor behind the front bumper cover (Millimeter Wave Radar) calibration procedure has a note regarding the position/angle of the sensor mounting bracket.

For example, per the 2022 Honda CR-V Service Information ➤ Driving Support & Restraints ➤ Repair Procedures, Tests ➤ Millimeter Wave Radar Aiming procedure: "The millimeter wave radar has a self-diagnosis function and if the mounting angle of the millimeter wave radar is outside of the horizontal auto-aiming range, it stores the failure information."

Typically, if the calibration procedure has that note, there is also a procedure in the service manual for sensor mounting location inspection. This procedure takes you through how to inspect the sensor mounting bracket for damage and make sure that the sensor is perfectly level. According to the procedure, any damaged components should be replaced.

For example, per the 2023 Acura Service Information manual ➤ Driving Support & Restraints ➤ Repair Procedures, Tests ➤ Millimeter Wave Radar Mounting Position Inspection procedure: "NOTE: If millimeter wave radar aiming cannot be completed, follow the procedure below to check that the millimeter wave radar is installed properly. Based on the check results, replace the faulty parts, and aim the millimeter wave radar again."

It is important to always follow OEM procedures for repairs and calibration. Finding this information quickly and efficiently contributes to a complete, safe, and quality repair.
