Calibration Research Tips: Nissan/INFINITI Module Programming

While searching for information on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on an OEM repair information site, you may come across unique calibration procedures or events. These events can vary by year and model, even within a particular make. As the RTS team has been researching these systems, we have been identifying these atypical circumstances. In order to help you better understand them, we are putting together a series of articles that help with the repair and calibration of ADAS. Let’s take a closer look at Nissan/INFINITI module programming.

Many cameras and sensors require calibration after certain events, like removal/installation and replacement. Some camera/sensors, which are also modules, require programming after being replaced. For Nissan/INFINITI, some of these modules are:

  • Camera near rearview mirror (Front Camera Unit)
  • Sensor behind front bumper cover/grille (Distance Sensor)
  • Sensor in quarter panel behind rear bumper cover (Side Radar)

Nissan/INFINITI refer to the programming process as module "configuration." The reason for module programming after replacement (and occasionally after removal/installation) is because the vehicle does not recognize the module and cannot communicate with it. Vehicle information is written” to the module through the scan tool.

If the vehicle and the module cannot communicate, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be set and most importantly, ADAS will not function properly.

When a module requires programming, it is specified in vehicle-specific procedures.

Per the 2021 INFINITI QX50 Electronic Service Manual ➤ Cruise Control & Driver Assistance ➤ Driver Assistance System ➤ Driver Assistance System ➤ Basic Inspection ➤ Additional Service When Replacing Front Camera Unit ➤ Description: "Always perform the front camera unit configuration and adjust the camera aiming after:

  • Removing and installing the front camera unit
  • Replacing the front camera unit
  • Replacing windshield glass"

Per the 2022 Nissan Rogue Electronic Service Manual ➤ Cruise Control & Driver Assistance ➤ Driver Assistance System ➤ Driver Assistance System ➤ Basic Inspection ➤ Additional Service When Replacing Distance Sensor ➤ Work Procedure: "Always perform the distance sensor configuration after replacing the distance sensor."

After the module programming is complete, the ADAS can then be calibrated properly.

It is important to always follow OEM procedures for repairs and calibration. Finding this information quickly and efficiently contributes to a complete, safe, and quality repair.
