DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)
The pyrotechnic components may be checked only when they are installed and with a Vehicle Diagnostic Tester approved by the manufacturer. When working on airbag components adhere to the warning
messages in the instructions.
– End the drive ready mode.
– Switch off the ignition and electrical equipment.
– Place the vehicle key and other start authorization systems (such as smartphones) outside of the vehicle interior.
– Pay attention to the safety precautions when working on A/C systems.
– Open the negative terminal cover above the battery monitor-ing control module
– Loosen the nut several turns and remove the battery monitoring control module from the battery negative terminal.
– Disconnect the connector from the Battery Monitoring Control Module -J367-.
– Wait 1 minute.
– Check the voltage of the 12V vehicle electrical system using a commercially available voltmeter.

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT
After an accident, all damaged parts must be replaced. If no airbag unit damage is detected, the airbag unit can still be used.Airbag control module must be replaced [MODULE,AIRBAG CONTROL]:
• With driver and passenger airbag deployment “but not with airbag generation 9.•, 10.• and 8.R”
• After three side airbag, driver, and passenger airbag or belt tensioner deployments.
• if housing is damaged
• if there is deformation on tunnel in 200 mm circumference around control module
Always replace the following:
• All deployed airbag units [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL; AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER; AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT; AIRBAG,REAR SEAT; AIRBAG,ROOF]
• The Battery Interrupt Igniter • N253-
Also with passenger airbag deployment:
• Instrument Panel
• Deformed passenger front passenger airbag unit (cannot be reformed).
• All sensors for front airbag on front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE; AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR; AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
Also with driver airbag deployment:
• Return Spring with Slip Ring [CLOCK SPRING/LVR,STRG]
• All front airbag sensors on the front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE; AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR; AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
Also with thorax airbag deployment:
• Pressure sensors on deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE; AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR]
• Transverse acceleration sensors on the deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
• Cover
• Cushion
• With folding rear seat backrests: side cushion (if equipped)
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area
Also:
• All automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt tensioners
• All automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt force limiters (depending on vehicle equipment)
• Seat belt latches for all automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt tensioners with the belt on
•Seat belt height adjuster (manual and power) for all automatic belt retractor with deployed seat belt tensioners with the belt on
PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED
After an accident, all damaged parts must be replaced.• If needed (visual inspection), the following must also be replaced: all faulty components
The following components must be checked after every airbag deployment.
With Front Passenger Airbag Deployment:
•Instrument panel crossmember; front passenger airbag supports and passenger airbag unit must be installed free of tension. Otherwise the central tube is to be replaced.
•Check the glove compartment for damage. Replace the glove compartment if damaged.
With a driver airbag deployment:
• Steering wheel
• Check steering wheel for smoke residue. If smoke residue is present, replace the steering wheel.
The seat belt system must be inspected systematically after every accident. If damage is determined at any inspection point, the customer must be informed that it is necessary to replace the seat belt.
Child Seat Anchors:
• Child seat anchors must be checked for damage or deformation after a collision.
• Child seat anchors welded or bolted into the body or the seat or backrest must not be repaired or straightened.
• Child seat anchors bolted into the body, seat or backrest must be replaced if damaged or deformed.
•The bolts used to secure the child seat anchors must be replaced if the bracket is damaged.
Seat belt system:
• Seat belt system
• Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester if there is a chance the belt tensioner and/or seat belt force limiter deployed.
• Depending on the crash, the belt tensioner may have deployed while the belt force limiter did NOT. In that case, follow the disposal information for pyrotechnic components
• If parts of the seat belt system are removed due to an accident, replace the belt system bolts
After replacing the airbag units or the control module, affix stickers (only tear-off strips) to the registration card and return the registration card to the relevant Sales Center or to the Importer for registration
Airbag Control Module:
• The airbag control module can be used for up to two deployments of the side airbag and/or seat belt tensioner with airbag generation 8.• »not 8.R«.
• The airbag control module with airbag generation 9.•, 10.• and 8.R. can be used for up to two side, driver and front passenger airbag and/or belt tensioner deployments
• After the third deployment, the malfunction indicator “Control module faulty” appears.
• A basic setting must be performed for the seat occupant detection system control module after each time the airbag or the front passenger side seat belt tensioner deploys. Use the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
• If the seat rail and/or the seat pan are replaced due to deformations after a collision, then the seat occupant detection system must be replaced. Then perform the “basic setting” for the seat occupant detection system control module. Use the Vehicle diagnostic tester.
