DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

• Inspection, testing and installation work may only be carried out by expert trained personnel in BMW Service.
• Work on components of the airbag system should only ever be carried out with the battery disconnected, the negative terminal post covered and the plug connection of the cable leading to the gas generator disconnected. If only the battery is
disconnected, the following prescribed waiting period must be observed without fail:

1 minute for vehicles from 9/93

• When carrying out straightening and welding work with an electric welder:
• Disconnect battery
• Cover negative terminal (post)

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

Replace the following components after airbag triggering:

Seats:
• Replace gas generator, active head restraint system [UNIT,ACTIVE HEADREST]. If the severity of the impact has not caused any other damage to the seat, only the triggered gas generator needs to be replaced

Driver's airbag [if Deployed] :
• [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL]
• Steering wheel, [if Driver airbag module Deployed]

Front-passenger airbag [if Deployed] :
• Passenger airbag module [AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL]

Side airbag, front/rear [if Deployed] :
• Replace airbag module [AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT], and, seat cover with upholstery

Head airbag [if Deployed] :
• Roof Airbag module [AIRBAG, ROOF]

Knee airbag [if Deployed; if equipped]:
• Knee protection [AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER]

NOTE: Head restraint: The firing unit may be replaced up to 5 times. Triggering frequency is denoted on the sticker on the head restraint carrier. Stickers are available as spare parts. The complete crash-active head restraint must be replaced in the event of a head restraint fault signal and an untriggered firer

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

Check and/or replace following components after airbag triggering:

• Sensor B-pillar (left/right) [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE]
• Sensor front door (left/right)
• Sensor seat, Driver-/passenger's side [AIRBAG SENSOR,SEAT TRACK]
• Airbag control unit, vehicle interior [MODULE, AIRBAG CONTROL]
• Front sensor (engine compartment) [AIRBAG SENSOR,ART BMPR]

Cables and plugs:
• Check cables and connectors for damage, replace if necessary

Seat belt system:
• Automatic reel
• Seat belt tensioner
• Seat belt height adjustment
• Anchor fitting tensioner
• Seat belt buckle
• Additional door lock: Check for foreign body, remove it if necessary

Seats:
• Seat
• Airbag module
• Active head restraint

Driver's airbag:
• Airbag module
• Steering Wheel
• Steering column (if damaged)

Front-passenger airbag:
• Airbag module
• Dashboard trim panel (must be replaced!)
• Supporting tube (if damaged)

Head airbag:
• Airbag module
• A-pillar trim panel
• Roofliner
• B-pillar trim panel (if damaged)
• C-pillar trim panel (if damaged)
• Connection/mount (on side frame)

Knee airbag [if equipped]:
• Trim panel (driver's side)
• Lower section of glove box
• Knee protection (Driver• and passenger's side)

Side airbag, front/rear
• Airbag module
•Door trim panel
•Door in white
•Seat

Check components; replace if necessary

Important!
Only repair those cables which show visible signs of damage. In the event of visible damage, make sure there is only one cable repair in effect after the repair work. If no visible damage can be identified, the entire cable must be replaced. When carrying out repairs to the airbag wiring harness, you must use the spare parts offered in the out Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC).
