DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

The pyrotechnic components may be checked only when they are installed and with a Vehicle Diagnostic Tester approved by the manufacturer.

When working on the airbag system (pyrotechnic components, Airbag Control Module • J234• , wiring):

1) The battery ground cable must be disconnected when the ignition is SWITCHED ON.
2) Then cover the negative terminal.
3) Wait for 10 seconds after disconnecting the battery

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

If the seat rails and/or seat pan is replaced due to deformations resulting from a collision, the passenger occupant detection system must be replaced using the “passenger occupant detection system service kit”.

Always replace the following
• All deployed airbag units [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL; AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER;AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL; AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT; AIRBAG,REAR SEAT; AIRBAG,ROOF]
• Also with front passenger airbag deployment
• Instrument panel
• Deformed front passenger module supports (cannot be reformed)
• All front airbag sensors on the front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR; AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also with driver airbag deployment:
• Return spring with slip ring [CLOCK SPRING/LVR,STRG]
• All front airbag sensors on the front end [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT; AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR; AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also with thorax airbag deployment
• Pressure sensors on the deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR]
• Transverse acceleration sensors on the deployed side [AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]
• Cover
• Cushion
• With a folding rear seat backrest: side cushion (if equipped)
• Remaining transverse acceleration sensors if the mounting points are deformed in the sensor area [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT; AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR; AIRBAG SENSOR,QTR PANEL]

Also:
• All automatic belt retractors with deployed belt tensioners.
• All automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt force limiters (depending on vehicle equipment)
• Seat belt latches for all automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt tensioners with the belt on
• Seat belt height adjuster (manual and power) for all automatic belt retractors with deployed seat belt tensioners with the belt on

All damaged fastening elements must always be replaced.

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

The airbag control module must be replaced [MODULE,AIRBAG CONTROL]:
• If the display "Control module faulty" appears after checking the DTC memory
• After three side/ driver/ front passenger airbag or belt tensioner deployments
• If housing is damaged
• If there is deformation on the tunnel within a 200 mm (7.87 in.) radius around the control module

With front passenger airbag deployment
• Instrument panel central tube; front passenger airbag supports and passenger airbag unit must be installed free of tension. Otherwise the central tube is to be replaced.
• Check the glove compartment for damage.
• Replace the glove compartment if damaged.

With driver airbag deployment
• Steering wheel

The seat belt system must be inspected systematically after every accident.

Passenger Occupant Detection System:
• Each time an airbag or passenger belt tensioner deploys, a basic setting must be performed on the passenger occupant detection system control module using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

Additional Head Curtain Airbag Safety Precautions:
• Visually inspect the trim panels for damage before every installation.
• Do not make any repairs to the trim panels (upper A-pillar trim panel, B-pillar-, C-pillar-, and D-pillar trim panels).

All damaged parts must be replaced after a collision. If no airbag unit damage is detected, the airbag unit can still be used.

If needed (visual inspection), the following must also be replaced:
• All faulty components.
