DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

• Inspection, testing and installation work may only be carried out by expert trained personnel in BMW Service.
• Work on components of the airbag system should only ever be carried out with the battery disconnected, the negative terminal post covered and the plug connection of the cable leading to the gas generator disconnected. If only the battery is
disconnected, the following prescribed waiting period must be observed without fail:

1 minute for vehicles from 9/93

• When carrying out straightening and welding work with an electric welder:
• Disconnect battery
• Cover negative terminal (post)

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

Replace the following components after airbag triggering:

• Steering wheel, [if Driver airbag module deployed]
• Driver airbag module: [AIRBAG, STEERING WHEEL], [if Deployed]
Only for the M Sport steering wheel: Replacing impact plate
• Passenger airbag module: [AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL], [if Deployed]
• Replace side seat airbag module and, if necessary, seat cover with upholstery [AIRBAG, FRONT SEAT], [if Deployed]
• Head airbag [if Deployed]
• Replace gas generator, active head restraint system [UNIT,ACTIVE HEADREST], [if Deployed]. If the severity of the impact has not caused any other damage to the seat, only the triggered gas generator needs to be replaced
• Roof Airbag module [AIRBAG, ROOF], [if Deployed]
• Knee protection (driver's and passenger's sides), (if equipped) [AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER], [if Deployed]

Replacing gas cartridge for crash-active headrest on left or right:
Important!
• Renewal of pyrotechnics may be carried out up to 5 times.
• Triggering frequency is denoted on the sticker on the head restraint carrier.
• Labels are available as spare
• The complete head restraint must be replaced in the event of a crash-active headrest fault message and non-activated igniter

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

Check and/or replace following components after airbag deployment:

• Front Sensor, (engine compartment) [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]
• Sensor, B-pillar, left/right [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE]
• Sensor, front door [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR]
• Sensor, driver's/front passenger side
• Sensor, pedestrian protection
• Airbag Control Unit [MODULE, AIRBAG CONTROL]

Cables and plugs:
• Check cables and plugs for damage, replace if necessary

Seat belt system:
• Electrically motorized reel
• Seat belt tensioner
• Seat belt height adjustment
• End fitting pretensioner
• Seat belt buckle

Seats:
• Seat
• Airbag module
• Active head restraint

Driver's airbag:
• Airbag module
• Steering Wheel
• Steering column

Front-passenger airbag:
• Airbag module
• Dashboard trim panel (must be replaced!)
• Supporting tube

Side airbag, front/rear:
• Airbag module
• Door trim panel
• Door in white
• Seat

Head airbag:
• Airbag module
• Trim, A-pillar
• Headliner
• Trim, B-pillar (if damaged)
• Trim, C-pillar (if damaged)
• Connection/mount (on side frame)

Knee airbag (if equipped):
• Trim panel (driver's side)
• Lower section of glove box
• Knee protection (driver's and passenger's sides) [AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER]

Passive knee protector:
• Trim panels (driver's side)
• Glovebox incl. knee protector (passenger side)

• Any restraint system part or wiring identified by diagnostic check

Important!
Only repair those cables which show visible signs of damage. In the event of visible damage, make sure there is only one cable repair in effect after the repair work. If no visible damage can be identified, the entire cable must be replaced. When carrying out repairs to the airbag wiring harness, you must use the spare parts offered in the out Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC).

NOTE: Head restraint: If the severity of the crash has not caused any other damage to the seat, only the triggered gas generator needs to be replaced.
External feature: The triggered head restraint is folded forwards and engaged.
The repair work can be carried out in the vehicle with the rear panel removed. The entire system can be pushed back into its
original position and the new gas generator installed.
The gas generator can be replaced up to 5 times.
