DISABLE PROCEDURE AND TIME (Always Check Service Manual)

CAUTION: This vehicle has 3 batteries.
1) Disconnect battery earth lead (engine compartment)
2) Disconnecting the battery earth lead from the battery located at the luggage compartment floor

• Inspection, testing and installation work may only be carried out by expert trained personnel in BMW Service.
• Work on components of the airbag system should only ever be carried out with the battery disconnected, the negative terminal post covered and the plug connection of the cable leading to the gas generator disconnected. If only the battery is disconnected, the following prescribed waiting period must be observed without fail:

• When carrying out straightening and welding work with an electric welder:
• Disconnect batteries
• Cover negative terminals (post)

PARTS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FOLLOWING A DEPLOYMENT

Replace the following components after airbag deployment:

• Steering wheel, if Driver airbag module Deployed
• Driver airbag module [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL; AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER], if Deployed
• Passenger airbag module [AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL; AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER], if Deployed
• Dashboard trim panel, if Passenger airbag module deployed
• Replace airbag module and seat cover with upholstery [AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT], if Deployed
• Replace gas generator, active head restraint system, if deployed [UNIT,ACTIVE HEADREST]. If the severity of the crash has not caused any other damage to the seat, only the triggered gas generator needs to be replaced.
• Roof Airbag module [AIRBAG, ROOF], if Deployed

NOTE: Active head restraint: The gas generator can be replaced up to 5 times.

PARTS THAT MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED IF DAMAGED

Check and/or replace following components after airbag deployment::

• Sensor B-pillar (left/right) [AIRBAG SENSOR,SIDE]
• Sensor front door (left/right) [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRT DOOR]
• Sensor seat, Driver-/passenger's side [AIRBAG SENSOR,PASS SEAT]
• Airbag control unit, vehicle interior [MODULE, AIRBAG CONTROL]
• Front sensor (engine compartment) [AIRBAG SENSOR,FRONT]

Cables and plugs:
• Check cables and plugs for damage, replace if necessary

Seat belt system:
• Automatic reel
• Seat belt tensioner
• Seat belt height adjustment
• Anchor fitting tensioner
• Seat belt buckle
• Additional door lock: Check for foreign body, remove it if necessary.

Seats:
• Seat [AIRBAG,FRONT SEAT]
• Airbag module
• Active head restraint

Driver's airbag:
• Airbag module [AIRBAG,STEERING WHEEL]
• Steering Wheel
• Steering column

Front passenger airbag:
• Airbag module [AIRBAG,INSTRUMENT PNL]
• Dashboard trim panel (must be replaced!)
• Supporting tube (if damaged)

Head airbag:
• Airbag module [AIRBAG, ROOF]
• A-pillar trim panel
• Roofliner
• B-pillar trim panel (if damaged)
• C-pillar trim panel (if damaged)
• Connection/mount (on side frame)

Knee airbag:
• Trim panel (driver's side)
• Lower section of glove box
• Knee protection(Driver• and passenger's side) [AIRBAG,KNEE BOLSTER]

Check components, replace if necessary
