Honda/Acura Glass Replacement Requirements

Honda/Acura Glass Replacement Requirements

The role of the windshield is a lot more complex than simply allowing a view of the road ahead. It is considered a structural part of the vehicle as it contributes to the strength of the roof and A-pillars. The windshield helps to manage collision energy and has become an integral part of several advanced safety systems.

It is commonly asked; what is required when replacing a windshield? With this question in mind, we will be presenting a series of articles that highlight some of the requirements from the various OEMs. Let’s see what Honda/Acura has to say.

The information that we are looking for can be found in vehicle-specific Honda/Acura body repair manuals. For 2016 model year vehicles:

  • Honda/Acura does not identify a specific brand of glass adhesive or pinchweld primer.
  • It is important to stay within the same product line for the primer and adhesive. Refer to the product maker’s directions for curing time and do not use adhesive after its expiration date.
  • During the installation process, it is important to keep the door glass open until the windshield installation is complete. This will help to prevent the sealant from cracking should the doors be opened and closed, causing a pressure change.

As a special caution, vehicles equipped with a multipurpose camera unit will need to have the camera re-aimed. Detailed aiming procedures, static and dynamic, are provided in the vehicle specific service manual under Multipurpose Camera Aiming.

Honda/Acura states that the use of non-OEM glass may cause the driver assist or other safety systems to not operate correctly or not at all. If an aftermarket glass is used, there is the possibility that the black ceramic border may not allow the camera to see through it properly.
