How Prevalent Are Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)?

Today, most people in the collision industry have heard at least something about Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). ADAS normally requires special treatment during a collision repair, such as calibration. You may think that you don’t have to be too concerned about these systems because it’s only on really high end vehicles. But, that’s not the case. A recent document released by WardsAuto tells us just how common ADAS is on new vehicles.

WardsAuto has compiled a list showing how many vehicles sold in the U.S. during 2016 are equipped with some sort of ADAS. Along with what percentage was out of the total 2016 vehicle sales. Per the WardsAuto % Factory Installed Electronic/ADAS Equipment on U.S. Cars and Light Trucks, 2016 Model Year article:

  • Rear Camera 15,276,779 Units or 86%
  • Rear Parking Sensors 6,240,918 Units or 35%
  • 360° Camera System 979,846 Units or 6%
  • Blind Spot Detection 5,281,385 Units or 30%
  • Lane Departure Warning 3,465,230 Units or 20%
  • Adaptive Cruise Control 1,967,787 Units or 11%
  • Collision Warning 3,051,239 Units or 17%

With numbers like these it is no longer a matter of if you will have to repair a vehicle with ADAS, but a matter of when. It is your responsibility to make sure and educate yourself on what goes along with repairing these systems. Also, it is important to learn how to identify if the vehicle you are repairing is equipped with ADAS. Check out the RTS Portal for additional tools and articles on ADAS.
