Per I-CAR curriculum: “As vehicle technologies evolve, decisions on which parts to use and how to use them become more complex. The variety of construction materials and advanced electronics make the collision repair process more challenging than ever. Being informed on recommended repair practices is critical. One of the repair practices is choosing service parts to use for each repair. While there are several options available to you, please note that I-CAR is not in the position to make specific recommendations about which parts should be used.
Rather, I-CAR is dedicated to providing those in the industry with the information, knowledge, and skills required to perform complete and safe, and quality repairs for the ultimate benefit of the consumer. Whether or not to use a recycled part is a business decision that must be agreed upon by all parties involved in the repair process.”
When determining if a recycled part can be used, part attachment and layering are considerations. If you are unable to remove the part without destroying the mounting location, then the next option would be the possibility of replacing it in conjunction with adjacent panels as an assembly. If adjacent panels cannot be accessed, then the part may not be a candidate for replacement with a recycled part.
