Corrosion Protection Guidelines: Honda/Acura - UPDATE

A key factor in collision repair is making long-lasting repairs. When a vehicle is repaired, many areas of corrosion protection are disturbed. This creates corrosion hot spots that left untreated will lead to corrosion and potentially a repair failure. However, there are certain precautions that can be taken to safely and properly restore the corrosion protection, throughout the repair process. OEMs often give specifications on restoring corrosion protection. These specifications generally include seam sealer, adhesives, foam fillers, and cavity waxes. Let's take a look at what Honda/Acura says.

Honda Corrosion Protection Body Repair News and Acura Corrosion Protection Body Repair News documents give specifics on corrosion protection use.

Seam Sealers:

  • "Must be applied to all panel seams and match factory function and appearance."
  • "Never apply seam sealers to bare metal."
  • "Apply them only over cured, epoxy primer, 2K urethane primer, or factory e-coat."

Rust Preventative Treatment (Cavity Wax):

  • "Inside cavity of any welded panel."
  • "Backside of repaired panels if access for proper sanding and epoxy primer application is not possible."
  • "Inside and backside of new replacement parts where possible."

Epoxy Primer:

  • "You must apply 2K epoxy to all bare metal surfaces prior to applying any seam sealer, body filler, or other refinishing products."

Backside Treatment of New Panels:

  • "The backside of new replacement panels (fenders, door skins, quarter panels, etc.) should be prepared and coated with a 2K urethane primer surfacer/sealer for corrosion protection.
  • This 2K urethane primer should match the factory inside coating color and shade followed by a mist coat of catalyzed basecoat."

In vehicle-specific body repair manuals under Body Repair ➤ Rust Prevention ➤ Repair Procedures you will find documents that refer to locations for corrosion protection application and other information.
